External Fixator Pin & Wound Care

Good pin and wound care is paramount in preventing infection and obtaining an optimal surgical result. Please follow the directions below once daily.

Supplies
1. Isopropyl alcohol
2. 4 inch gauze
3. 2 inch gauze
4. 2 inch roll gauze
5. Q-tips
6. Tape
7. Small plastic container
8. Scissors

Technique
1. Clean around pin/skin interface with q-tips saturated with alcohol. Remove any debris.

2. Cut the 2 inch gauze with scissors 50% of the width. Then saturate in alcohol.

3. Place the gauze round the pin.

4. Secure the gauze against the skin with the rubber stopper.

5. Apply 4 inch gauze over any incisions and wrap with 2 inch gauze, apply tape.

If redness, cloudy drainage, or pain occur at the pin sites, please notify the office as soon as possible.
